Dear fellow children of Canada:

My name is Rachel. I’m 12 years old, and I have an urgent message to share with you about the dangers of Genetically Modified foods – GMOs.

On October 16^th at 1:00 pm, I’m participating in a public speaking presentation to demand GMO labels on foods that our parents buy for us, and we innocently consume every day.

I’ll be one of the first speakers, around 1:00 pm.

Location: 612 Markham St. (Beit Zatoun), Toronto (at Bathurst subway)

Canadian Organic Growers Toronto and Ruth’s Foods are holding a rally against genetically modified organisms (GMOs): GMO – Your Right2Know.

As part of Organic Week, October 15-22 and non-GMO month, and in support of the Right2Know March from New York to Washington, D.C., we will ‘live stream’ Guest Speakers from the conclusion of the march in Washington.

Monsanto and other biotech companies have been foisting their genetic engineering technology on an unsuspecting and unwilling public. Dangers to the environment and our health are clear.

Despite numerous polls and protests clearly showing the public’s support of at least labeling food that contains GMOs, these companies and the politicians that support them need to be told again and again what we want.

Let’s make this a North America-wide shout out against GMOs and a demand for labeling so people can make the choice for good, safe food.

There will be local speakers, a new film on GMOs and music.

Over 50% Chemicals Aren’t Tested

Is it any surprise that over half of all chemicals in this database haven’t had any testing done? Yes humans love to rush things don’t they?

Beyond Pesticides Daily News Blog » Blog Archive » EPA Releases Database on Environmental Chemicals, Exposes Data Gaps: “(Beyond Pesticides, March 18, 2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a new online database that collects information on more than 500,000 synthetic chemicals from over 200 public sources. The Aggregated Computational Toxicology Resource (ACToR) database provides access to hundreds of data sources in one place, enabling easy access for environmental researchers, scientific journalists and the public. However, more than half of these chemicals do not have any detailed testing data.”

COG Toronto is holding its annual conference with an impressive line up of speakers in the organics movement including Baerbel Hoehm, the first Agricultural Minister for the German Green Party and Michael Schmidt, the raw milk dairy farmer. The event will happen on Saturday, February 20, 2010 9 am to 5 pm at the University of Toronto Conference Centre (89 Chestnut St., Toronto).

FROM RAW MILK TO GERMANY

Baerbel Hoehm, the first Agricultural Minister for Germany from the Green Party will be sharing insights on what the German Government accomplished under her direction to support organic farming. In addition, we have just confirmed Michael Schmidt, the dairy farmer from Durham who was recently acquitted of all criminal charges relating to the sale and distribution of raw milk and raw milk products.

We are also looking forward to hearing from Percy Schmeiser, the Saskatchewan farmer who challenged Monsanto, Rick Smith, Executive Director of Environmental Defence Canada to speak as one of the panel on Land vs Development: Questions about the Greenbelt, Tom Manley, President of Homestead Organics, who will speak on the panel about Slow Money, and Megan Westgate, Executive Director of the Non-GMO Project which is helping retailers take products containing GMO’s off their shelves.

FoodCycles (http://foodcycles.org) is hosting one of the first largest screenings of the award winning DIRT! the Movie in Toronto at Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor St W; map) on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 (6:30-8:30 PM). Dirt! the movie tells the amazing story of the earth we stand on everyday and how we depend on it for life. In addition, FoodCycles is fundraising for its education work. Tickets will be available online and at the door on a sliding scale of $10-20. There will be a reception at 6:30 PM and the movie will start at 7 PM and end at 8:30 PM. You can buy sprouts, vegetable earrings or memberships during the reception.
